“Of such great powers or beings there may be conceivably a survival... a survival of a hugely remote period when... consciousness was manifested, perhaps, in shapes in forms long since withdrawn before the tide of advancing humanity... forms of which poetry and legend alone have caught a flying memory and called them gods, monsters, mythical beings of all sorts and kinds...”

--Algernon Blackwood (1869-1951)

The Horror in Clay, the first part of this new trilogy of plays adapted from H.P. Lovecraft’s classic tale of cosmic horror, begins in March, 1925 when a neurotic, young sculptor named Henry Wilcox seeks out Dr. George Angell, a renowned professor at Brown University, and presents him with a strange bas-relief in clay that he has created after a series of disturbing dreams. The sculptor describes images associated in these dreams with the words Cthulhu and R'lyeh, which just happen to coincide with the professor’s research into a mysterious cult, whose followers worship a gigantic, ancient deity they believe will emerge from the depths of the ocean to once again rule over the earth.
